When you think of basketball and the 1992 Olympic Games, the legendary US Dream Team probably comes to mind first. With players like Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, or Scottie Pippen, that's not surprising. But not only the USA made history back then, the Lithuanian national basketball team was also in the spotlight at the Olympic Games...and that in colorful tie-dye outfits sponsored by the US rock band Grateful Dead. But how did this rather unusual collaboration come about?

To answer this question, we first have to look at 1988. There, the Soviet Union's national basketball team defeated the US team. At this point, no active NBA professionals played in the US national team. But after this humiliating defeat, this quickly changed in 1992 with the Dream Team. What is worth mentioning, however, apart from the US reaction, is that 4 of the 5 starting players of the Soviet Union were from Lithuania. But at that time, the Baltic country was still part of the USSR and was therefore not allowed to field its own team. This was to change in 1990, however, when Lithuania declared its independence and wanted to compete in the 1992 Olympic Games with its own team. Here, however, a problem arose: the country/team did not have the financial means for it. This is where Grateful Dead came into play. The legendary rock band had been involved in charitable causes for years and learned of the Lithuanian team's efforts. The band was inspired by the story and promptly sponsored the national team with financial resources and clothing, which led to the creation of the legendary T-shirts that are real collector's items today.

At this point, Lithuania was unstoppable and fought its way to the semi-finals where it suddenly faced the tournament favorite, the USA. But despite the defeat against the Dream Team, a symbolically more important game for bronze was to follow, namely against the team of the former Soviet Union. The relatively small country was able to assert itself and put an exclamation mark behind its recently won freedom. Normally, teams wear their warm-up clothes for the medal ceremony, but the Lithuanian team decided to wear the outfits sponsored and designed by Grateful Dead as a sign of gratitude. This created many of the iconic images that are still seen again and again today.
