College Sweatshirt Outfits

Sweatshirts have their origin in sports, when in 1926 the football player Benjamin Russel Jr. had the idea for a training jersey made of all-cotton. Not long after the first sweatshirt hit the market in 1930, it became an all-rounder in many wardrobes and the college sweatshirt with the iconic inscription was also not long in coming. The original trendsetter when it comes to college sweatshirt outfits is undoubtedly Lady Diana. With her sporty looks, she paved the way for many others trying to pull off the same style. The oversized college sweatshirts are worn with biker shorts, tennis socks and a pair of sneakers. Here you can see two of her iconic looks:

In the cult series "The Prince of Bel-Air" Will Smith takes the chance to represent Morehouse College with a college sweatshirt, which at the time of racial segregation in the USA could only be attended by African Americans and thus belongs to the HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).

Hailey Bieber is also regularly seen rocking her college sweatshirts. Here she is wearing a pair of denim shorts for a more summerly look, but she also manages to dress it up with an oversized blazer, white pants, high heels and a purse.

NBA point guard Chris Paul also frequently wears college sweatshirts to support HBCUs. Here he is seen in the NBA Tunnel wearing a hoodie from Texas Southern University and a sweatshirt from Winston Salem State University.

Drake takes a different approach to the theme, but definitely stays true to his own style. What at first looks like a normal orange sweatshirt with the inscription Tennessee, is actually part of a project of the designer @icantdecideyet. Here, he takes college sweatshirts and reworks the original lettering to create a new word or phrase - which is how Drake's Tennessee became "Finesse".

Like Will Smith and Chris Paul, rap duo Kris Kross is also rocking hoodies from an HBCU - Howard University. Together with baggy pants and white sneakers it hardly can get any more 90s.
